Discover a boarding school with a rich history that reflects your values of personal integrity and academic excellence, where faculty inspire students to greatness in college and life, and where you can embrace opportunities in clubs, athletics, and the arts. The Webb School, founded in 1870, is a co-educational, college preparatory school of approximately 290 students in grades 6 through 12. Webb is located in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, a rural community 50 miles Southeast of Nashville. The closest airport is Nashville International Airport, which is only an hour from campus. AcademicsThe mission of the school is "to turn out young people who are tireless workers, and who know how to work effectively; who are accurate scholars; who know the finer points of morals and who practice them in their daily living; who are always courteous." These are the words of our founder, and they still ring true today. Learning does not just take place in the classroom, it surrounds our students.Webb offers both a standard college-preparatory diploma track, and a more rigorous Honors Diploma. In addition to standard requirements, electives are offered in economics, ethics, psychology, journalism, speech, drama, and fine arts. Webb School's Fine Arts program requires that each student, starting with the Class of 2010, take one semester of Fine Arts per year. Members of the Class of 2008 will need to take 3 semesters of Fine Arts. The program includes a variety of classes in theatre, art, and music. Choir, String Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Dance will also be part of this program. There are also nine Advanced Placement courses offered. Classes are led by 42 faculty members, 65 % of who hold advanced degrees. The average class size is twelve students and the student to teacher ratio is 7 to 1. College CounselingWebb students have recently been accepted to colleges such as American University, Boston College, Carleton College, Centre College, Columbia University, Davidson College, Duke University, Emory University, George Washington University, Harvard University, Kenyon College, New York University, Northwestern University, Smith College, Tufts University, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, Vanderbilt University, Wake Forest University, and Yale University.English as a Second LanguageThe English program for international students is for students with levels of proficiency ranging from beginner to advanced. Level I students receive instruction in beginning work. This special English program for international students includes a United States History course; a vocabulary based Life Science course; and classes in English conversation, vocabulary, grammar, composition, and literature. Level II students work in grammar and literature texts used in mainstream English classes and work in fundamental vocabulary texts. Level III students are mainstreamed into regular English classes and may work one period a day with an ESL teacher for assistance with reading assignments. Students in this program attend regular math classes appropriate to their grade levels. ESL students are mainstreamed into regular Webb classes after one or two years of study in the ESL program.Life at WebbWe recognize the responsibility associated with offering an international program. The school understands that international students and their families will have particular needs and concerns to be addressed. To this end, Webb offers one-on-one tutoring, faculty advisors, weekend excursions, transportation to and from the airport, and other services to benefit the international student and his or her family.Students actively participate in each class and interact with each one of their teachers. Every student also has a faculty advisor who serves as a counselor and advocate for that student. All Webb students eat lunch with their advisor during the week, upper school students do so twice a week while Middle School students do so three times a week. After school, Webb students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. These range from interscholastic sports, to creative and performing arts, to our outdoors program, to a number of different clubs and activities. A typical weekend at Webb provides different options for our students to have some fun. We will have things here on campus like dances or pizza nights; we will go out to dinner, the mall, or the movies in Murfreesboro (20 minutes away); to sporting events, concerts, or restaurant trips in Nashville (1 hour away); or hiking, canoeing, and white water rafting throughout the region. Although Bell Buckle itself is a very small town, there are plenty of opportunities surrounding us to take advantage of on the weekends.
