St. Anne's-Belfield, a traditional college preparatory school, was founded in the early 1900's. It is located in Virginia, a state that adjoins Washington, D.C., to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Blue Ridge Mountains on the west. The school is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, home of the University of Virginia, close to many historical sites, and in proximity to international airports. In our mild climate, students participate in outdoor sports year-round, although an occasional deep snow may provide an unexpected holiday from classes. The area affords a variety of cultural and sports activities in a safe environment. St. Anne's-Belfield offers an English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) program for Upper School students. Students applying for admission to the school and to the program must demonstrate at least an intermediate level of English. We offer two levels of E.S.L.: high-intermediate (E.S.L. III), and advanced (E.S.L. IV). Students are not fully mainstreamed until they have reached an advanced level of English proficiency. Once mainstreamed, the students pursue the college preparatory program with the help of supportive teachers. The E.S.L. program is designed to prepare international students for the academic rigors of the Upper School and ultimately for college, thus an emphasis is placed upon the academic skills of reading, writing, and grammar. E.S.L. students are expected to participate in team sports, in the arts, and in clubs in order to develop their physical, creative, and social skills. In order to explore American culture and history firsthand, students also take field trips during the year, and are often invited to homes of families within the school community for a meal or other activities. Most E.S.L. students are seven-day boarding students. Enrollment in the school's boarding program is limited to between 35 and 40 students in our effort to maintain the program's sense of family and community. In past years foreign students have come from countries such as South Korea, Japan, Spain, Germany, Yugoslavia, Colombia, Venezuela, Indonesia, Angola, South Africa, and Zaire. The boarding program also enrolls students from the Charlottesville area and surrounding counties. The dormitories are located on the second and third floors of the administration building. Rooms are arranged in suites with two rooms sharing a bathroom. Students share a common dining room and lounge. Meals are provided by a local caterer. Admission Requirements
