Study and prepare for university in the rolling hills of central Virginia, one of the most beautiful regions of the USA. Located in the city of Charlottesville (recently recognized as one of the best places to live in all of North America), Miller School is only 20 minutes from the University of Virginia, where numerous graduates have continued their studies. Situated on 1600 acres at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Miller School is home to its own 12-acre lake for swimming, fishing and boating. The peaceful, spacious campus has many scenic views and several trails for walking, hiking or biking. We are approximately 120 miles southwest of Dulles International Airport, in Washington, D.C.

Miller School offers a welcoming, supportive, and challenging program for roughly 150 boys and girls in grades 8-12 and post-graduate who seek a university preparatory curriculum and great opportunities in arts, athletics, and community service. A typical class schedule consists of six classes, with each class meeting for 50 minutes Monday through Friday. A Help Session is available to all students at the conclusion of classes, providing an excellent opportunity for individual help on a daily basis.

International students who need to further develop their English skills enroll in an ESL class. This is usually in place of a foreign language class. After developing better English skills, many of our international students choose to study French, Latin, or Spanish. However, the study of another foreign language is not required of our international students. Miller School assists our international students in preparing for the TOEFL exam, usually in their junior and senior years.

Faculty

There are 38 professional faculty and staff members at Miller School. They are wholly committed to helping each student advance in their academic studies and develop the life skills necessary for success beyond high school. A hallmark of Miller School is the close relationships that students develop with faculty members. In many cases, our faculty members serve not only as teachers, but also as coaches, advisors, and dorm directors. Because students and faculty members interact on so many levels, they are able to develop meaningful, lasting relationships that are of great benefit to the students. About half the faculty lives on campus, and it is not unusual for international students to spend part or all of a holiday with a family on campus.

Applying For Admission

For a complete list of our application requirements, please see the admissions section of our website (web address listed at end of section). The application is available online, a popular choice for our international students. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. First round notifications are sent in early March. Several applications are typically received after this time, and for those, decisions are usually made within two weeks of receiving the completed application. The I-20 form needed to acquire a student visa is issued by Miller School after a student returns the contract and enrollment deposit.

Student Life

Miller School is mainly a boarding school and offers many extracurricular opportunities and programs for our residential students. Examples include going to athletic contests or artistic performances at the University of Virginia, going to the movies, going to shopping malls, ski outings at nearby resorts, day-long trips to amusement parks, dinners at restaurants, and many, many other opportunities. Miller School is proud to have its own International Student Club that organizes fund-raising activities and special programs geared to the specific interests of our international students. Prior to the opening of school in the fall, we hold a special orientation program for our new international students. Parents are welcome to attend this as well. About 25% of our student body consists of international students. Recently, international students have come to Miller from Brazil, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Madagascar, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.

Housing

Boarding students live on campus in either the boys' or girls' dormitories. Eighth grade and High School girls live in single occupancy rooms in one dorm (Wayland Hall). Eighth grade and High School boys live in one dorm (Old Main), with 2-3 boys per room. The dorms are fully furnished and provide a number of facilities including spacious student lounges, computer labs, private showers, and laundry facilities.
