Summer Scholar Programs OverviewBackground and PhilosophyThe University of Miami is the largest private research university in the southeast. Established in 1925, UM is known for its outstanding faculty, groundbreaking research, diverse student body, and history of excellence in athletics. The University's Summer Scholar Programs (SSP) were established in 1991. Taught by outstanding University of Miami faculty members, these programs present a unique opportunity for students to earn college credit in specific areas of concentration. The programs offer intensive three-week studies and students learn firsthand what college is like by living and studying on campus. Students also take laboratory classes and have the opportunity to learn about their particular interests by visiting local sites that are relevant to their fields of study.LocationThe University of Miami (UM) undergraduate campus is nestled in the heart of Coral Gables, a picturesque suburb that blends tropical splendor with Mediterranean-inspired architecture. Walkways link the flora-filled campus courtyard, plazas, arboretums, and quadrangles. Lake Osceola, located in the center of the campus, is surrounded by a red brick sidewalk and feeds into the canals that wander through the lush grounds. Enjoyment of nature, sports, water, and outdoor life are possible year-round in South Florida.Program OfferingsHigh school students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of programs to meet their interests. Programs typically include areas such as Broadcast Journalism, Engineering, Filmmaking, Forensic Investigation, Health and Medicine, International Relations Marine Science, Multimedia Design, Sports Management, and Writer's Symposium.Daily ScheduleThe program runs from late June to mid-July 2009 (see website for exact dates) and students are enrolled in courses that meet daily. All students live in campus residential housing, which is supervised by trained staff members. Three meals each day during the week and two meals each day during the weekend are provided. Several evening and weekend activities are planned, and anyone may participate.Housing and FacilitiesSummer Scholar students live in one of the residential colleges on the Coral Gables campus at the University of Miami.
