We are passionate about providing an educational environment which nurtures academic and personal growth and awakens the potential that resides in each of our students. A small, coeducational boarding and day school located just 2 hours from New York City in beautiful Kent, Connecticut, Marvelwood strives always to be a place where each child is known, valued, and treated with respect. Honors and Advanced Placement courses, English as a foreign language, private Strategies and math tutorial programs, and a dedication to experiential education enable Marvelwood to serve a diverse student body with a wide range of learning styles. Our experienced and dedicated faculty is committed to each student's success and delivers a superior educational program, attuned to individual strengths and weaknesses. Nonacademic programs including weekly community service, visual and performing arts electives, an impressive slate of interscholastic and noncompetitive sports offerings, and a variety of leadership opportunities increase the potential for engagement and success outside the classroom. In every way, the structure of the School is thoughtfully designed to support college-bound students in their efforts to achieve positive intellectual, social, personal, and moral growth. Marvelwood's comprehensive 3-tier ESL program is designed to help international students gain fluency in all areas of language; speaking, listening, reading, and writing. These skills are essential for the students to succeed in the mainstream program. New students are tested prior to enrollment to determine placement within one of three ESL levels. Placement of students is determined by three factors: The SLEP (Secondary Level English Proficiency Test), an essay written in a controlled setting, and a face -to-face interview with the ESL department chairperson. All courses offer small class size and are student-centered, utilizing an approach that includes pair work, group work, and oral presentations. All students participate in the School's athletic program which provides a combination of individual activities such as wilderness ways, snowboarding, canoeing, mountain biking, dance, skiing and snowboarding, and team sports, including soccer, basketball, softball, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, volleyball, cross-country, wrestling, ultimate Frisbee and alpine racing. Everyone at Marvelwood takes part in the Wednesday morning Community Service program which involves students and faculty in volunteer work in hospitals, nursing homes, childcare centers, animal shelters, homeless shelters, environmental organizations, local farms, and schools. The School has twice been honored by the State of Connecticut with the "Youth Action Award" for this program, and it is the only independent school in the state to have received this award.
"My husband and I believe the small class sizes, coupled with a caring teaching staff are the key to helping Daniel to excel at a higher level academically. We see the school as an investment in Daniel's personal development as well as his academic development and are excited about the community service and sports components of the program. The school's goal of assisting students to graduate with the ability to lead a life that is individually satisfying and beneficial to society align with our goal as parents."
