Looking for a challenging and supportive school where you live in a stately New England home in a small city located within fifteen miles of an international airport? .... then check out MacDuffie!

The School

The MacDuffie School, founded in 1890, is a coeducational, college preparatory day and boarding school serving approximately 225 students in grades 6 -12. MacDuffie is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and holds membership in the National Association for Independent Schools and SSATB.

Location

MacDuffie is located in Springfield, Massachusetts - a small city in the heart of the Connecticut River Valley. It sits at the crossroads of New England with Boston to the East and New York City to the South. Situated in a historic residential neighborhood, the School is within walking distance of many of the city's cultural and recreational resources.

Academic Program

MacDuffie prepares its students for college and successful lives in the modern world. Students acquire knowledge and appreciation of their intellectual capacity and cultural heritage. The curriculum includes a challenging college preparatory program including honors, advanced placement and extensive elective courses. MacDuffie students matriculate at some of the finest colleges and universities in the United States, such as Brown, Wellesley, Tufts, Johns Hopkins, Mount Holyoke and others.

MacDuffie welcomes students whose native language is not English. These students must have an intermediate mastery of English and a desire to acquire a more sophisticated understanding and usage of the language. Based on a test, students are placed in the appropriate level of ESL or in mainstream courses. While ESL classes form the core of our international student curriculum, all international students supplement their learning by taking courses in the other disciplines, i.e. math, science, history and the arts.

Ames Hill Boarding

Students from the United States and around the world attend MacDuffie and live on our campus with faculty families in stately, historic homes. Living is relaxed and comfortable with students and the house parents preparing meals and enjoying time together. Weekend activities include everything from shopping trips to the local mall and going to the movies to skiing in Vermont and exploring Boston, the capital of Massachusetts. Students have activities with their own "families" as well as the larger school community.

Interscholastic Sports Program

Students are encouraged to join one of the many team sports offered. Girls may play soccer, field hockey, basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, cross country and lacrosse. Boys choose among soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis and cross country. Although MacDuffie is a small school, students are very enthusiastic about their athletic involvement and have earned the school champion status in several sports: soccer, field hockey and softball. While participation is encouraged, it is not required for success at MacDuffie.

Extracurricular Opportunities

MacDuffie presents two theater productions to the delight of its own community and the community at large. These have included both dramatic and musical works such as: "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Midsummer Night's Dream." Students also select from over twenty clubs and activities to supplement their academic programs. These have included: Adventure Club, Key Club, Debate Club, Dance Ensemble, and Amnesty International.
