The Idyllwild Arts Academy is the finest high school in the country for the pre-professional study of creative writing, dance, film and video, music, theatre and visual arts.

Academics

In order to stimulate young people intellectually and to advance their knowledge in all areas, the Academy provides a challenging academic program.

Small classes (approximately 15 students per class), a caring faculty and an exciting curriculum make the academic program at the Arts Academy unique. These combinations lead to a successful academic experience for students at the Academy.

International students are placed in the appropriate level of English as a Second Language courses. The ESL program has an intensive, multilevel curriculum that provides excellent instructions to students with any level of proficiency.

The Arts

The goal of the Arts program is to provide students with pre-professional training in their chosen area of art. The program goes beyond the traditional arts curriculum to include in-depth study in creative writing, dance, film and video, music, theatre and visual arts.

The Interdisciplinary Arts Major program is designed for the student who has demonstrated an interest and talent in collaborative arts. The Academy designs a course of study for each student so he or she can take advantage of many arts courses and specialized interdisciplinary projects.

The Arts faculty is composed of seasoned professionals who stress the fundamentals so important in helping young artists to gain admission to the college, university, conservatory or professional company of their choice.

New! Department of Moving Pictures (Film & Video)

The Idyllwild Arts Academy has developed a new major to train talented young students in filmmaking, video production, audio engineering and new media. We educate the next generation of extraordinary artistic leaders in the film and video industries and prepare outstanding high school students for admission to the finest collegiate programs in the country.

Students in the Department of Moving Pictures take courses in the history, theory and philosophy of film and television, and a production course to develop concepts and shooting and editing skills. They work with actors to sharpen their leadership skills and writers to craft stories and scripts. The program takes place at our beautiful mountain campus in Idyllwild, but offers regular master classes in Los Angeles as well as visits from guest artists.

The School Community

At the Academy, students live and learn in a true community of artists--one in which student dancers, musicians, singers, actors, theatre technicians, visual artists, creative writers and interdisciplinary majors support and influence one another in many positive ways.

The Idyllwild Arts campus includes modern, comfortable dormitories, lecture halls, a science lab, classrooms, a performance hall, practice rooms, art studios and gallery, dance studios and theaters.

Boarding students share double rooms in dormitories supervised by resident dorm parents. The close-knit, family atmosphere provides a strong base of support for the artistic, academic and social lives of the students.

Activities

Since the campus is located at an elevation of 5,000' on 206 acres of mountain forest land, many of the recreational opportunities are wilderness-oriented. Hiking, rock-climbing and mountain biking are popular, as well as more traditional athletic pursuits.

Admission

The Arts Academy seeks enthusiastic, dedicated and talented young people who have a strong desire to pursue an arts education. The Academy subscribes to a policy of admitting students without regard to race, color, sex, religion or ethnic origin.

Recommendations, academic transcripts from the school previously attended, an audition or portfolio presentation and an interview are required.
