8 and 4-Week SessionsEvery year approximately 1,000 motivated high school students who have completed their senior, junior, or sophomore year spend eight summer weeks at Harvard University. They find the Harvard Summer School and its Secondary School Program (SSP) an exciting and rewarding Ivy League college experience and a unique opportunity to explore Harvard University. Living and learning with students from all areas of the United States and more than 90 countries around the world, SSP students take courses along with undergraduates, earn college credit, and learn from one another as well as in the classroom.Located on the Charles River in historic Cambridge, Massachusetts, America's oldest and most prestigious university provides a dynamic environment in which to preview college life. At Harvard, secondary school students prepare for college and for the college-admissions process. They explore academic subjects not available in high school, work with a distinguished faculty, use well-equipped labs, and study in the largest university library system in the world. They are given freedom and responsibility to establish their own priorities. For many, the Secondary School Program provides their first experience living in a dormitory, learning to take responsibility for their own actions, and meeting students from many different backgrounds. Secondary school students enroll in two 4-credit courses or one 8-credit course; students in the Boston area may attend as commuters and take either 4 or 8 units of credit. SSP students choose from the full array of nearly 200 Harvard Summer School courses in 45 liberal arts fields. Exciting courses and events are scheduled through the Drama Program and Math Program. The Writing Program offers a wide array of writing courses, as well as evening readings by visiting authors. The College Preparatory Program includes trips to New England colleges, a large college fair, a workshop entitled "Writing the College Application Essay," and a talk by a Harvard admissions officer on the college selection process.
