Academic Life

Fryeburg offers a comprehensive curriculum which meets the needs of its diverse student population. The college preparatory offerings include accelerated sections and thirteen Advanced Placement courses. Students may elect course offerings from the general program to supplement their college preparatory program of study and each student's academic program is designed to meet his or her individual needs. A minimum of 19 credits is required for graduation; these must include the following courses: English, history, science, mathematics, and computer proficiency. Students must enroll in at least five academic subjects, but most elect to carry six. The curriculum offers four levels of ESOL, beginner, intermediate, advanced, and transitional.

Lively Classes

At Fryeburg Academy the average class is 15 students. This allows for individual attention, stimulating teaching and the opportunity to participate in spirited classroom discussions.

Academic Support

At Fryeburg Academy we recognize that students learn differently so we tailor our academic support services to meet those individual styles and needs. Through tutorial and small group sessions we offer the individualized instruction students require to achieve the level of performance that matches their abilities.

Extra-Curricular Offerings

Interscholastic sports include field hockey, soccer, football, cross-country, golf, tennis, lacrosse, wrestling, basketball, baseball, softball, alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, and track and field. The Mount Washington Valley region offers opportunities for recreational skiing at five major resorts. In addition to athletic offerings students may elect to participate in the following activities: student government, marching band, math team, community service club, Spanish club, French club, dorm council and audio-visual club. Extensive weekend and afternoon activities are custom tailored to student interest.

Guidance and Counseling

Being away from home, facing the pressures of adolescence and making plans for the future are challenges faced by every boarding student. At Fryeburg Academy we are keenly aware of these difficulties and our counselors work closely with students to help them overcome these challenges. In addition to counseling services, all students have an academic advisor and a college advisor. The student maintains the academic advisor for the duration of his/her study while the college advisor is assigned during the student's junior year. The academic advisor helps students choose courses and adjust to Academy life while the college advisor works closely with the student during the college application process.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL is offered to those students where English is not their first language. Fryeburg Academy offers four levels of ESOL instruction. These students spend one to three periods a day in classes designed to equip them with the language skills necessary to be successful in the American school and university system. In addition to classroom instruction, ESOL teachers take the students on field trips so they can use their emerging language skills and be exposed to aspects of American culture.

Campus Life

Fryeburg Academy remains a unique American institution, a boarding school unlike any other in the nation. The Academy enrolls a large number of day students from the surrounding area as well as boarding students from over twenty countries and a dozen U.S. states. This mix enriches Academy life and provides the residential students the opportunities to participate in a full array of curricular, extracurricular and athletic offerings uncommon in small boarding schools.
