Purnell School, New Jersey

How did you choose your school?

I was interested in looking for schools which had a strong art and theater program. Purnell SchoolÅfs art classes allow students to express their own style of drawing, painting, pastel, ceramic and photo. While students draw and process for their visual learning, they also learn how to think logically in order to get their own unique drawings.

During my four years at Purnell, I was able to experience not only the studio art department but also the performing arts department. I worked backstage and I was able to use my drawing skills in making scenes.

Also, my parents thought an all girl school was a safe place to go.

What do you like best?

Purnell pushed me to learn and challenges my abilities.Ý It is easy to be close with teachers and friends.

I have the ability to take a broad range of humanity classes.

What do you miss most?

I miss my family so much

How has your English improved?

I can easily talk, understand and communicate. PurnellÅfs faculty and students have let me open my heart and share ideas that I have. I learned English so quickly because of the students and teachers trying to listen to what I wanted to say.

What was your biggest surprise?

I love the diverse education system, especially the way of understanding the visual learner and logical learner. It is wonderful that they consider the different ways of learning.

How have you handled language differences?

I tried to talk and listen carefully to how native people speak and to learn the cultural differences. However, most importantly, I tried to share what I have to offer and give to my friends.

What are your activities?

Technical theater, volleyball, lacrosse, Roots and ShootsÅ\Community Service Group, student government, ShadesÅ\diversity social group. Playing the drums, taking competitive sports, and acting on the big stage were things that always scared me but were the main things I have done in my high school.

What will you remember most?

I will not forget the challenges I have gone through and the support I have had from people at Purnell.

What is your advice to other students?

If you would like to be independent, want to find your potential and have your voice heard, you need to have more time to be with yourself. Once you decide to learn far away from people whom you love, you will find out how much they mean to you. You will feel the strong growth in yourself.
