Interview The Conserve School
Daniel Kazmi, from Iceland Danny is in 12th grade at Conserve School in Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin. Why did you decide to attend boarding school in the U.S.A.? The culture of the United States has always been interesting to me, I wanted to experience the traditions, such as holidays. I also wanted to learn the English language very well. I plan on going to an American University and studying International Business, perhaps. How did you choose your school? It was a good academic school, had great outdoor programs and it has basketball, which I love to play.
What do you like best? The campus is beautiful and if you like the nature this is the place to go. There are trails where you can go biking, running or just take a walk. We have a nice lake where you can go kayaking, canoeing or swimming. The classrooms are full of excellent equipment. Sometimes we go outside and do activities which make the class much more fun. I like how the teachers connect the environment to their classes. We help keeping the trails clear. We recycle mostly everything and we try to keep things as environmental and sustainable as possible. What was your biggest surprise? How strong and challenging the education here is. People here are more open about things, it is so easy to make friends. ... your biggest disappointment? We don’t have the freedom to go out on the weekends to restaurants or clubs.
How have you handled: At first it was difficult, but after a few months, I picked up the language very easily. Everyone is very patient and helpful with my learning. ...Adjusting to a different educational system? It was pretty easyŠI like the way it is here. Back in Iceland you take one test and that is your grade for the class. Here your grade can change daily, you can work hard to manage your grade and see progress. What are your activities? Basketball, track & field, kayaking, biking, hiking, winter snow activities. What will you remember most? My friends and the small class sizes, with individual attention from my teachers. The teachers make such an effort to help you, in or out of the classroom. What is your advice to other students? Go ahead and take the challenge, it is worth it! If you get cold feet, that’s ok, it’s such a great experience. Make sure to speak and learn the language well.
